FIRES AND FASCISM is an upcoming two-part documentary due for release at the end of 2025. It aims to link the fascism of the past to the wildfires of today and to showcase how communities are suppressing the rise of both.
Throughout June-September 2024, 48 people were interviewed about their experiences with wildfires or their expertise in tackling them, their experience fighting against organised crime and political corruption that increases wildfire risk, or their involvement in community-building projects whose aim is to create a society where fascism is less likely to happen again.
The interviews have explored mental health, biodiversity loss, community-building, wildfire resilience, organised crime, and attitudes towards fascism. Interviewees have included teachers, firefighters, artists, authors, engineers, politicians, foresters, and conservation scientists.
Dr Pete Knapp, the filmmaker, has a background in air quality and has shifted career from academia to storytelling. The reason for making the film is to understand how modern day fascism capitalises on any crisis and, in the case of wildfires, make them more likely. It aims to start the conversation on what we do about the rise of fascism today.
The edit may take between 9 – 12 months and funding is required to pay for this. Additionally, archive footage will be needed to give context to the fire-prone regions of southern Europe and purchasing these licenses will be required. Crowdfunding has provided the means to gather the footage, but grants are now required to pay for the edit and archive licenses.
